Winter Porta Potty Rentals in the Lehigh Valley: What Freezes, What Does Not, and What We Do About It
Average January lows in Bethlehem sit around 22°F and the Valley gets about 33 inches of snow. Here is how a unit handles that, what we change on winter service visits, and when a heated trailer is the right call.

What freezes in a porta potty, and at what temperature?
The waste tank liquid freezes first, usually after two or three nights below 20°F, which Bethlehem sees most January weeks. Flush water and sink reservoirs in deluxe units freeze sooner, around 25°F. The polyethylene shell, the door latch and the vent do not freeze, but a latch can ice shut after freezing rain. The paper and sanitizer are fine.
What do you do differently on winter service visits?
From mid-November through February every service visit adds a non-toxic propylene-glycol antifreeze mix to the tank charge rated to about 0°F, adds antifreeze to the fresh-water tank of flush and sink units, clears the roof vent of snow, checks that the latch moves, and pressure-washes with warm water. There is no extra charge; it is part of the 28-day rate.
On exposed sites we also turn the door away from the northwest wind and stake the unit, because a frozen, empty unit in a 40 mph gust is the one most likely to tip.
Can the service truck reach a unit after a snowstorm?
Only if the path is plowed to within 25 feet of the unit and the unit door is clear. If we cannot reach it we come back on the next route day at no charge and note the missed visit on the invoice. After a big storm, crews that shovel the unit out first thing in the morning keep their service day.
When is a heated restroom trailer the right winter choice?
For multi-weekend winter events with staff and vendors on site for hours, such as the Christkindlmarkt vendor areas at SteelStacks (weekends from mid-November through December 20 in 2026), a heated two-station trailer at $1,650 per weekend keeps a thermostat-controlled room, hot water and lit steps. For a one-day tree lighting or a jobsite, winterized standard units are the right call.
Event dates from ArtsQuest. Trailers need two 20-amp circuits for the heaters; we heat-trace the water lines and run the heat from delivery onward.
Three winter mistakes we see every year
First, putting a unit at the bottom of a plowed-in driveway where the service truck cannot reach it. Second, renting a flush unit for January and expecting it to flush at 10°F. Third, forgetting that the City of Bethlehem bars right-of-way openings from December 1 to March 1, so a planned curb placement has to move to the yard. Each one has a five-minute fix if you call before delivery.

Do you charge more in winter?
No. Rates are the same year-round and antifreeze service is included. The only winter cost is a missed-visit note if the unit cannot be reached, and that is free.
